Fun Facts:
The Birth of the Announcement
It is common to send a card to announce the arrival of our child: This is the birth announcement!
Birth announcements haven’t always existed in the form as we know them now... at least not in its manuscript form.
The tradition dates from long ago...
In the beginning, it was not the parents who decided of the name of their newborn child but was instead chosen by the godfather and godmother. Following tradition, the chosen name was announced to everyone on the day the child was baptised.
Only childbirths of nobility such as of royal lineage or of high nobility were subject to birth announcements. The parents of these wealthy lineages would present a small card to their circle of friends and family indicating only the gender of their newborn child. As traditions evolved, parents would eventually select the name of their child themselves and indicate it on this small card with a pink or blue ribbon tied to it.
The first documented birth announcement in manuscript form goes back to the end of the 18th century; more precisely in 1781 where a man named Gauthier de la Peyronie proudly announced the birth of his son using a manuscript birth announcement.
The greatest innovation came in the 1900s with the illustrated card. Behind the card, an announcement would be made in the form of pre-printed text with some blank spaces to allow manual entry of the birth date, the weight and the name of the newborn child.
Today’s birth announcement!
Nowadays, the announcement is often comprised of a photo which is sent the month following the birth date. Digital birth announcement are growing more and more in popularity and it is not rare to receive a birth announcement by email. Digital souvenirs can be broadcasted all over the world in a blink of an eye!
